Bijoy Dash

Bijoy Dash

‘Bijoy is a very active child who has shown steady improvement across the board. We are proud that Bijoy has been promoted to KG 1’ – Extract from Bijoy’s school report

Bijoy Dash lives in Bandarban, in south-eastern Bangladesh. Bandarban, translating as the ‘Dam of Monkeys’, is one of the most beautiful areas of the country; its picturesque mountain ranges, which boast the three highest mountain peaks in Bangladesh, draw tourists from the all over the world. Despite improvements, historical problems of insurgency and ethnic divides remain. The region is still under quasi-military control for instance, as has been the case since Bangladesh’s inception.

These difficulties prevent the region from enjoying a truly significant tourist trade and thus confine its economy predominantly to agriculture, as with much of Bangladesh. Bijoy, like many other children in Bandarban, lives in poverty.

Bijoy with his family

His entire family live in one tin hut and his father, working as a daily labourer, struggles as the family’s sole provider. Thus without the work of the JAAGO foundation, Bijoy would not receive the standard of schooling he deserves.

Bijoy, albeit only five, is flourishing at his JAAGO sponsored school. His near complete attendance, progress in all development areas and outstanding results are a source of pride to the foundation, us as a charity and most importantly his family.

He now enjoys reading in his spare time and tells us he dreams of being an engineer! With the help of the foundation, and some more sustained hard work from Bijoy, we are confident he can reach his dreams.
